SALT LAKE CITY, UT — A Utah state court today granted Planned Parenthood Association of Utah's, which the ACLU of Utah is representing, request for a temporary restraining order (TRO) blocking a 2020 abortion ban that took effect late Friday following the U.S. Supreme Court's overruling of Roe v. Wade. The TRO will allow abortion services to resume in the state, effective immediately.
Valentina De Fex, Senior Staff Attorney for the ACLU of Utah, shared the following statement in response to the court issuing the temporary restraining order:
"No one should have to carry a pregnancy forcibly against their will. Today, the court issued a temporary restraining order with immediate effect that temporarily permits clinics to resume providing essential healthcare. The hearing provided a stark reminder of anti-abortion laws' harms on Utahns and individuals around the country. The hearing also served as a forum to strongly argue the State of Utah's constitution offers protections of rights independent of federal law. Today's order is a win, but it is a first step in the long struggle in continuing to fight for reproductive justice in our state."
