Utah Court Blocks Abortion Ban for Second Time
Abortion Services Continue in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY, UT — A Utah state court today granted Planned Parenthood Association of Utah’s request for a preliminary injunction (PI) blocking an abortion ban that, if permitted to take effect, would bar nearly all abortions in the state. The law was first blocked by the court through a temporary restraining order (TRO) on June 27, after the ban temporarily took effect following the U.S. Supreme Court’s June 24th decision overruling Roe v. Wade. The PI will allow abortion services to remain available while the litigation over the ban in Utah state court proceeds. Planned Parenthood’s challenge to the ban argues that it violates numerous provisions of the Utah Constitution, including Utah’s guarantee of equal rights for men and women, and its protections for individuals to make their own decisions about family composition and to maintain their bodily integrity.

Statement from Karrie Galloway, president, and CEO of Planned Parenthood Association of Utah:

"We’re grateful that for now, abortion services remain legal and available in Utah. The past few weeks since the Supreme Court’s ruling have been terrifying and confusing for our patients and providers across the state. But let me be very clear about one thing: abortion is legal and available in Utah up to 18 weeks. And Planned Parenthood will continue to fight to make sure it stays that way.”
