ACLU of Utah in Court to Defend Utah Woman Charged with Lewdness in Her Home

On Tuesday, November 19, 2019, ACLU of Utah's Senior Staff Attorney Leah Farrell argued at the court hearing that Utah's lewdness statue was unconstitutional because it treats women and men (and theit bodies) differently for the same offense. Intervenning on behalf of Tillie Buchanan, a Utah women charged with lewdeness for disrobing in front of her step-children after a messy home improvement project, Farrell argued that the current Utah lewdness law is based on gender stereotypes, and requires women to calculate if their actions would cause offence, when a man does not have to make the same determination.
