A Message from Brittney Nystrom
2024 has been an important year in our work to safeguard the civil rights and civil liberties of all people in Utah. Attacks here in Utah on the rights of the LGBTQ+ community, reproductive rights, free speech, and voting rights have been rampant—and will only increase in the coming years.
Despite an incoming Trump presidency, not all is bad news. Because of our work and that of our partners over this past year, abortion remains legal in Utah through 18 weeks, mail-in voting has been further cemented as an easy and accessible way for Utahns to vote, and county jail officials were found liable for terrible abuse of individuals incarcerated in their jail. In 2024, we successfully challenged restrictions on Utahns’ free speech, including the denial of municipal permits for drag performances and use of force against protestors on college campuses. We are poised and prepared to combat current and future challenges to Utahns’ fundamental rights, including censorship in our classrooms.
We know this work will be difficult, unsteady, and complex. But we are up to the challenge. The ACLU has upheld the rights and freedoms of individuals for more than a century and we are proud and committed to continue this fight. On behalf of our staff and Board of Directors, I want to extend my appreciation for your support. The work we undertake is fueled by our volunteers, members, donors, and supporters of all kinds, and we are forever thankful for you placing trust in us and our mission. We will never stop our tireless advocacy, because “We the People” means ALL the People.
