As a private organization, the ACLU of Utah receives
no government funding and never charges its clients for legal representation.
Our existence depends entirely upon private donations, foundation grants,
court-awarded legal fees from successful cases, and membership dues. Contributions
to the ACLU of Utah provide the resources necessary for a vigorous defense
of the fundamental liberties outlined in the Constitution and its Bill
of Rights, and they can be made to one of the ACLU of Utah’s two separate
corporate entities: the ACLU of Utah Union
or the ACLU of Utah Foundation. Individuals
who wish to financially support our efforts can do so in a variety of
different ways.
Become a Card Carrying Member
A
strong, broad membership base enables the ACLU to weigh in on the
important issues of the day and lobby for civil liberties and civil
rights protections at both the local and national levels. Membership
dues go to the ACLU of Utah Union
to help fund Utah’s important work at the state legislature
and our national office’s work in Congress. Membership contributions are not
tax-deductible.
Make a Tax-Deductible Donation Supporters
can also make a tax-deductible donation to the
ACLU
of Utah Foundation. The entire affiliate legal program as well
as our public policy and educational programs are supported by gifts
to the ACLU of Utah Foundation.
For additional information about how to make a tax-deductible donation
to the ACLU of Utah Foundation, please email
or call us at (801) 521-9862 ext 101.
Purchase Tickets to ACLU of Utah Events Each year, the ACLU of Utah hosts the
Bill of Rights Celebration. Generally held in the spring, this fundraising
dinner offers people a chance to come together to honor those Utahns who
have worked to advance the cause of civil liberties in this state and
to support the work of the ACLU of Utah. If you would like to receive
an invitation to this event as well as to other ACLU of Utah activities,
please email or call us at (801)
521-9862 ext 101.
Donate Securities In an effort to accommodate donations
of securities, such as stocks, bonds, and mutual fund shares, the ACLU
of Utah Foundation has established a brokerage account with Charles Schwab
& Company. Donating appreciated securities to the ACLU of Utah allows
donors the same income tax-deduction as gifting cash. However, once donated
securities are the property of the ACLU of Utah, they can be liquidated
without incurring any capital gains tax liability for either the donor
or the ACLU of Utah. Because of this tax advantage, most financial advisors
recommend gifting appreciated shares, if you have them, rather than cash.
If you are interested in learning more about donating securities, please
email us or call (801) 521-9862 ext 101 and ask to speak with the ACLU of Utah Development Director.
Create a Legacy Many
individuals choose to express their lifelong commitment
to liberty by creating a legacy that helps safeguard the
ACLU’s future. They do so by naming the ACLU Foundation
in their wills or by establishing charitable giving plans.
Nationally, the ACLU has established the DeSilver Society
to recognize this special group of loyal supporters. Their
dedicated foresight and philanthropy, in the form of bequests
and giving plans that provide income to donors or their
beneficiaries during their lives, provide precious revenue
to the ACLU after their lifetimes. Throughout the ACLU’s
history, thousands of individuals have chosen to act as
stewards of our constitutional heritage for future generations.
If you are interested in more information about how to join
the DeSilver Society, please contact us via email
or by phone at (212) 549-2518.
