Protecting the Bill of Rights in Utah since 1958

ACT NOW to stop unfair immigration legislation!

15 February 2008 Published in Legislative Work

Senate Bill 81, "Illegal Immigration," will likely be debated on the Senate floor next Tuesday, February 19, at 10:30 a.m. SB 81 is an extensive omnibus bill modeled on a similar bill passed in Oklahoma last year, which has had many negative consequences and now is being challenged by a coalition of business groups (including the Oklahoma and United States' Chambers of Commerce). SB 81 unfairly targets undocumented immigrants and undercuts the ability of the federal government to regulate immigration.

That is why we need YOU to tell YOUR senator to vote "NO!" on SB 81!

Each Senator's email is included - and linked! - below. Find the Senator who represents your area, and make sure he or she hears from you about why Senate Bill 81 is bad policy. The senators in bold are those that we would especially like to contact. If you know of people, family or friends in areas outside of Salt Lake City, please encourage them to contact their senators about this bill.

Here are a few talking points you can use:

Immigration is an area that is wholly regulated by federal law and any attempt by states to legislate in this area could force our state to defend costly litigation. Similar legislation passed in other states has been challenged in court and has often been ruled unconstitutional.

The government has a right to control its borders, but it must do so in a way that respects the rule of law. The guarantees of due process and equal protection contained in the U.S. and Utah Constitutions apply to all persons in this country and state, not just to U.S. citizens.

During these uncertain economic times, legislators must be cautious before passing legislation that could impact us all. This bill could have very serious economic impact and other unintended consequences. There must be more study and better solutions before we rush to action.

Rather than pass a bill like SB 81, which has great potential to negatively impact our economy, families, and communities, please instead support the creation of a taskforce to study this issue, as proposed in SB97 by Senator Jenkins.

If you prefer to contact your Senator by phone, call (801) 538-1035 and ask the Senate Operator to connect you with your Senator. If they are not available, please leave them a message asking them to vote against SB 81.
