Protecting the Bill of Rights in Utah since 1958

ACTION ALERT: Protect The Right To Vote!

23 January 2012 Published in Legislative Work

Tell members of the House Political Subdivisions Subcommittee that the right to vote includes the right not to vote!

H.B. 253, Voter Registration Amendments, could require the county clerk to remove YOU from the voting rolls if you choose not to vote in two consecutive general elections. Targeting a voter to be removed from voting rolls simply because he or she chooses not to vote in an election violates the federal National Voting Rights Act (NVRA) and could put Utah at risk of inviting costly litigation.

The right to vote is the most fundamental right we enjoy as Americans. It is a right, guaranteed by our Constitution, and not a privilege. The right not to vote, whether in protest or because a voter does not support the candidates, is encompassed in the right to vote. Exercising the right not to vote should not place a voter at risk of becoming unregistered.

Utah should be encouraging its citizens to participate in elections, not making it more difficult for those who may not have cast ballots in recent elections, particularly considering Utah's dismal voter turnout rate.

If the proponent of H.B. 253 believes voting rolls need to be updated, the NVRA provides specific and lawful means for purging voters; targeting people who haven't voted in two general elections violates this federal law.

Please email the House Political Subdivisions Subcommittee below and encourage them to oppose this bill.
