It's been a hard fight, but death penalty repeal is making progress in the Utah legislature! We have one last chance to keep the momentum building and abolish the death penalty in Utah.
The full Utah House of Representatives will vote on Death Penalty Amendments Bill (SB189) any moment now. The legislative session ends at midnight on Thursday, March 10 so we don't have much time.
With your help, we were able to successfully move the Death Penalty Amendments Bill, introduced by Senator Steve Urquhart through Utah Senate, and last night it passed out of the House Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee. This much-needed bill would prevent the application of the death penalty in all cases after May 10, 2016, and it has one final hurdle.
Life in prison is a far better alternative to the death penalty. It is a severe sentence that both keeps us safe and protects against wrongful executions. It is a swift sentence which is often preferred by victims' families over the years of mandatory appeals associated with death sentences. Ending the death penalty would save us tens of millions of dollars and would move us forward in reforming our criminal justice system.
Thank you for taking action once again.
